Therefore, I chose to disable my Norton 360 backup.

 

Step 1: Begin by double-clicking the Norton 360 icon in the system tray at the bottom-right corner of the screen.



 

Step 2: Click the white Settings link at the top of the window.



 

Step 3: Click the blue Backup Settings link at the center of the window.



 

Step 4: Click the green On button to the right of Backup so that it says Off.



 

Step 5: Click the yellow Apply button at the bottom of the window to apply your changes.



 

When you return to the Norton 360 home screen, it should now say Disabled in the Backup section. The ugly red X over the system tray icon will also be gone, and Norton will indicate that you computer is secure.

Fortunately you can turn off the Norton 360 desktop gadget using one of several different methods.

 

Disable the Norton 360 Desktop Gadget

 

The Norton 360 desktop gadget serves the function of simply telling you the state of your computer. If your computer is protected, then it will display the word “Safe” inside a horizontal green bar. If there is a problem, it will display a red bar with the word “Fix.” This is helpful if you have forgotten to perform a task, have disabled an important feature, or you need to renew your subscription. But if you need the space on the desktop or you do not find the gadget to be helpful, you can disable it easily. Be sure that you are signed into a Windows 7 Administrator account, or you may be unable to make any of the changes below.

 

Option 1: Hover your mouse over the Norton 360 gadget, then click the red X at the top-right corner of the gadget.



 

Option 2: Right-click the gadget, then click the Close Gadget option.



 

 

How to Uninstall the Norton 360 Gadget

 

You can also completely remove the Norton 360 gadget from your computer so that it is gone and you do not have the option of re-enabling it later in the future. Note that you will need to completely uninstall and re-install Norton 360 if you decide that you want to use the gadget again at some point in the future.

 

Step 1: Right-click in an empty spot on your desktop, then click the Gadgets option.



 

Step 2: Right-click the Norton 360 gadget, then click Uninstall.

 






Step 3: Click the Uninstall button to confirm that you want to uninstall the widget. Note that this is only uninstalling the widget, not all of Norton 360. The wording on the pop-up window is confusing.



 

 

Please note that, if these options are not working for you, then you may need to uninstall and re-install all of Norton 360 to get the gadget to function correctly, as a correctly installed Norton 360 gadget can be removed using these directions.

You can use the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool to remove and re-install all of your Norton 360 products. Read the disclaimer at the top of the page, as some Norton products will need to be re-installed manually.

You may also be able to remove the gadget by disabling the Norton Tamper Protection setting temporarily, removing the gadget, then re-enabling Tamper Protection. You can disable Tamper Protection by:

Your next smartphone or electric vehicle might be powered by a nuclear battery instead of your usual lithium-ion cell thanks to a breakthrough made by University of Missouri researchers. This is bad news for those of you who think that WiFi signals are bad for your health — especially if they’re received by a smartphone situated near your head or gonads — but great news for all of the people who value all-day battery life ahead of increased radiation exposure. The world could probably do with reduced fertility rates anyway, right?

First, just to put your mind at rest: This nuclear battery doesn’t contain a mini nuclear fission reactor — that would be insane (at least given our current grasp of nuclear power generation, anyway). Instead, this battery, developed by Baek Kim and Jae Kwon at the University of Missouri, uses the betavoltaic process to generate electricity. A betavoltaic device, as the name implies, is fairly similar a photovoltaic device — but instead of generating electricity from photons, it generates electricity from beta radiation — i.e. high-energy electrons that are emitted by radioactive elements. A betavoltaic device is constructed in almost exactly the same way as a photovoltaic cell: a piece of silicon (or other semiconductor) is wedged between two electrodes, and when radiation hits the semiconductor it produces a flow of electrons (voltage, electricity).

“But surely having a battery, and thus a mobile device, packed full of radioactive material is a bad idea” I hear you say. And usually, yes, you’d be right. What makes a betavoltaic battery somewhat safe is that beta radiation can be easily stopped with a thin piece of aluminium; gamma radiation, on the other hand, has so much penetrative power that it can only be stopped by a big lump of lead (or other dense metal). This doesn’t mean that beta radiation in itself is safe — it can cause cancer and death — but it’s much easier to control. Just make sure the betavoltaic nuclear battery casing is more than a couple of millimeters thick — and don’t drop it. Ever.



Anyway, back to the University of Missouri’s battery. Basically, Kim and Kwon’s nuclear battery consists of a platinum-coated titanium dioxide electrode, water, and a piece of radioactive strontium-90. Strontium-90 (Sr-90) radioactively decays with a half-life of 28.79 years, producing an electron (beta radiation), an anti-neutrino, and the isotope yttrium-90. Y-90 itself has a half-life of just 64 hours, decaying into more electrons, anti-neutrinos, and zirconium (which is stable). The best thing about using strontium-90 as a fuel is that it produces almost no gamma radiation — so, as far as radioactive materials go, it’s pretty safe and easy to handle. (Still, there’s no avoiding the fact that it’s used extensively in medicine, both for radiotherapy of cancer, and as a radioactive tracer.)

While betavoltaic batteries are fairly old hat — they powered some of the earlier pacemakers, before more advanced chemistries such as lithium-ion arrived — the Missouri researchers say that their addition of water is a key breakthrough. Not only does water absorb a lot of the energy of the beta radiation (in high quantities it’s damaging to the betavoltaic semiconductor), but the beta radiation also splits the water molecules, producing free radicals and electricity.



“Water acts as a buffer and surface plasmons created in the device turned out to be very useful in increasing its efficiency,” Kwon says. “The ionic solution is not easily frozen at very low temperatures and could work in a wide variety of applications, including car batteries and, if packaged properly, perhaps spacecraft.” [Research paper: doi:10.1038/srep05249 - "Plasmon-assisted radiolytic energy conversion in aqueous solutions"]

 



Ultimately, even if beta radiation can be quite easily contained, I doubt we’ll ever see commercial nuclear batteries. Those headlines about exploding lithium-ion batteries are already scary enough; I can’t imagine Apple or Samsung will ever open themselves up to even worse headlines/lawsuits. (“Smartphone owner dies from acute radiation sickness after dropping his phone”.) There’s also the distinct possibility of terrorists creating a dirty bomb from all of that strontium-90 (which itself isn’t cheap, incidentally).

For now, nuclear batteries will probably only be used in military and space applications, where extreme longevity outweighs any risks. Still, it’s nice to dream of a smartphone or other mobile device that never once needs recharging…

At the Oculus Connect developer conference in Hollywood, Oculus VR has revealed its next step towards a consumer-ready virtual reality headset: the Crescent Bay prototype. Crescent Bay has a better and lower-latency display, 360-degree head tracking, much reduced weight (and improved comfort), and integrated headphones (with 3D audio support). Crescent Bay is a feature prototype — it won’t be made commercially available, but many of its features should make it into the Oculus Rift Development Kit 3 (DK3). Early hands-on impressions of the Crescent Bay VR headset are very positive indeed — though the general consensus is that it still very much needs a separate controller or gamepad.

The most obvious differences are the addition of integrated headphones, and the whole thing just looks a lot lighter and more svelte. Everyone who tried the new VR headset at the Oculus Connect conference remarked on how light it is, and how it doesn’t cause as much neck strain. It sounds like the front goggle section is now constructed out of a lighter/more hollow plastic. With Crescent Bay being a feature prototype, though, rather than a development kit, Oculus VR might’ve intentionally veered towards thin-and-light rather than heavy-and-rugged. After all, if it’s mainly going to be used by journalists and influencers at conferences and trade shows, you might as well spend a little extra time and money on making it super light and ergonomic.

For the integrated headphones, Oculus VR licensed RealSpace3D’s technology to provide positional 3D audio. Crescent Cove also provides true 360-degree head tracking, thanks to a new camera on the back of the headset. The LED markers (the white specks) are still used for motion tracking — and now there are motion-tracking LEDs on the strap that goes around the back of your head. There is a new display inside the headset, but technical details aren’t available. According to hands-on demos, overall latency is significantly reduced (a new demo app involves you standing in front of a mirror, with a floating mask mimicking your movements, which is a fairly brutal test on latency).



Oculus VR also announced some improvements on the software side of things, too. The Oculus Platform will be a unified catalog/store for developers to distribute their VR apps and experiences (this is what Samsung’s Gear VR will use, too). Moving forward, the Unity 3D engine will support Oculus Rift as well. Curiously, Oculus also said it would open-source the design of the Rift DK1 headset, to generally boost anyone else looking at jumping into the virtual reality market.

Moving forward, there’s no word on when Development Kit 3 (DK3) will be released — but DK2 followed Crystal Cove by a couple of months, so that seems a reasonable timeline. Perhaps most importantly, it’s still not clear when we’ll see a consumer-oriented version of the Oculus Rift. Crescent Bay is certainly a big step in the right direction towards a mass-market device — but there are still a few stumbling blocks that Oculus will need to navigate its way around. The external camera that tracks your movements can still only track you in a fairly small area — so you can’t actually run away from dinosaurs or zombies. Not to mention, Oculus Rift is wired — so you’re not going to stray too far from your PC, in any case.



One possible solution for both the tether and limited motion tracking would be some kind of gamepad or controller. There are rumors that some kind of controller is coming from Oculus — and indeed, we thought one would be shown off at the Connect conference — but so far nothing has emerged. In any case, we’re sure that Oculus VR still has a few more tricks up its sleeve — especially now that it’s got billions of dollars in backing from Facebook.
